Then decouplers in 4, the main engine in 3, a decoupler in 2 and a parachute in 1. So in my case, I put the solid boosters in stage 5, the first to fire. Then it's as simple as dragging the items you want to the proper stage.

You can use plus to add a bunch of empty stages. How do you do this? If you hover your mouse over the staging list, you'll notice a number of plus and minus signs pop up.
